ArchivalResource

Frederick O. Phelps papers and audio tapes, 1967-1968.

This collection includes papers and 15 open reel tape sound recordings. The papers consist of correspondence written by Frederick to his parents and friends during his time in Vietnam and miscellaneous items including church bulletins, postcards, photographs, newspaper clippings, Phelps's philosophical comments on the war, and the Story of Peace Chapel which describes the construction of a chapel at Camp Radcliff. The audio recordings were made on a portable reel-to-reel recorder using 3 inch reels, allowing for about 20 minutes of recording on each side of each tape. These recordings were sent back and forth between Phelps and his family and friends.Typically the receiver listened to the tape's content and then responded by recording over the original contents. Most of the surviving recordings describe the daily lives of Midwesterners in the mid-1960s although they do contain some content related to the war and activities at Camp Radcliff.
